HIGH SCHOOL FAITH FORMATION

Saint Francis of Assisi
High School Faith Formation

High School Youth Group

St. Francis of Assisi High School Youth meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month from 6-8 p.m. This program provides faith formation for the teens as well as the opportunity to pray together and form community with the other members in the program.

At the heart of the task of catechesis is the person of Jesus. (GDC #98) The missionary mandate of Jesus calls us to proclaim, witness, teach, celebrate sacraments and love our neighbor (GDC #46).

Parents are the primary educators of their children in the faith. It is through the witness of Christian life given by parents within the context of the family that children are formed to respond to the call of their Baptism. The care that is taken to model and explain the Christian and religious meaning of events together with parental support of formal catechesis provided by the parish’s catechetical program form children in faith. “Family catechesis precedes . . . accompanies and enriches all forms of catechesis.” (GDC #226).

The catechists, staff, Father Brad and parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church are dedicated to helping children grow in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ and in their love for and knowledge of the Catholic faith.

Confirmation

What is confirmation? Confirmation is a sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. Like Baptism and Eucharist, it is a Sacrament of Initiation for Catholics and a Sacrament of faith in God’s fidelity to us. Confirmation is regarded as the perfection of Baptism, because, as the introduction to the Rite of Confirmation states: by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.

Here at St. Francis of Assisi confirmation is usually celebrated spring of the sophomore year of high school. Youth must have participated in religious formation for at least one year prior to the year of preparing for confirmation. The year of receiving the sacrament the youth preparing for confirmation will be required to have regular attendance at High School Youth Group on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month from 6-8 p.m.; attend our confirmation retreat in the fall; and two additional confirmation sessions in the spring before receiving the sacrament of confirmation.
(from the Rite of Confirmation)
All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by water and the Holy Spirit
you freed your sons and daughters from sin
and gave them new life.
Send your Holy Spirit upon them
to be their helper and guide.
Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of right judgment and courage,
the spirit of knowledge and reverence.
Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence.

Workcamp

Every summer St. Francis of Assisi Youth Group goes on at least one (many times two) Group Workcamp Trips. Youth and young adults look back on their “Workcamp” experience and pinpoint this mission trip as a place their faith deepened dramatically, where they bonded like never before. They hear God’s word…do God’s Word…and become more faithful followers of Christ. Our top goal while on these trips is for all participants to grow spiritually.

We have gone on Group Workcamps for eight years and have a great respect for Group. We travel by bus (or private vehicles), take our tools, sleep on air mattresses (or floors), eat in cafeterias, shower in school gyms, and sweat out in the heat. We usually join between 300 and 400 other youth and adults in different areas of the United States to work on the homes of the elderly and the less fortunate. We paint exteriors and interiors of homes, build fences, build wheel chair ramps, build porches, clean, drywall, roof, etc. We help bring the pride back into people’s lives and Christ back into their lives. It is a chance to spread the word and build relationships.

Sign up’s start in August and September of the year prior to the summer camp. The two camps for summer of 2009 are already full. We are traveling to Lead, South Dakota and Beaumont, TX. There will be a meeting late spring 2009 so that you can receive information on the following year’s Workcamp. Costs for the Workcamps vary in cost from $550 to $750. Fundraisers are held throughout the year to help cover the cost for the individuals. If you would like to receive more information regarding our summer Workcamp, please contact Julie Escalante at jescalante@stfranciscr.org

Youth Bible Study

Are you interested in coming to a Bible Study especially for teens? We have an awesome Bible Study – T3! T3 is a newly-released teenage version of the revolutionary Great Adventure Bible Timeline learning system that hundreds of thousands of Catholic adults have used to learn the Bible.

T3 makes the Bible come alive for Catholic teens by unpacking God’s Word in a way you can relate to. T3 teaches you the Bible by showing you the ―big picture‖ of salvation history. You begin to wrap your mind and heart around the Scriptures. You will come to see the Bible as something good and relevant—and then make it part of your life.

T3 is Relevant! T3 is intentional in its layout and systematic in its communication of the Scriptures. Its unique approach—coupled with an engaging DVD video presentation and interactive workbook materials—insures that your experience of the Bible will be anything but ordinary.

If you are interested in joining us for this new Bible Study, please contact Julie Escalante at jescalante@stfranciscr.org

Theology of the Body for Teens

Theology of the Body for Teens presents the two hottest topics on the planet – God and sex—and ―marries‖ them through Pope John Paul II’s compelling vision for love and life. Using a great mix of stories, real-life examples, activities, prayers, and references to the culture that teens understand, Theology of the Body for Teens answers the questions teens have about their own bodies, issues on sexual morality, and how they were uniquely created for greatness.

Theology of the Body for Teens answers questions such as:
Why did God give us our sexual desires?
What is the difference between love and lust?
Can Christ bring healing to me if I’ve already ―messed up?
How far is ―too far?
How can teens remain pure in our oversexed culture?
Is there any hope for overcoming lust and pornography?

St. Francis of Assisi is looking to begin a Theology of the Body for Teens class beginning in the spring of 2009. If you are interested in taking part in this class, please contact Julie Escalante at jescalante@stfranciscr.org
