The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Corpus Christi Sunday!
Today we as a Church celebrate the great gift of the Eucharist. The Real Presence of Christ. The Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ that each precious consecrated host contains. It is a phenomenal gift that our Lord and Savior gave to us. As we celebrate this most beautiful Solemnity, we celebrate the passing along of this most wonderful gift by the beauty of First Holy Communion that will be received by our young people. I was blessed to have learned the precious gift of the Eucharist from my father Donald, who taught me about it by word and example. My Dad looked forward to receiving the Eucharist each day as he made it a point to go to Mass each day prior to going to work. For him it was really "food for the journey" as he went about his work and his day. In retirement he looked forward to going to Mass each day and receiving Holy Communion. As he struggled with the effects of Parkinsons he looked forward to the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion bringing him the Eucharist. As a Priest I was able to not only administer the Sacrament of the Sick, but give him Holy Communion for the last time right before he died. I was able to give back to my Dad, what he passed along to me - the precious gift of the Eucharist. I want to personally thank the parents of those receiving Holy Communion for the first time. I want to thank their families as well. I want to thank the catechists and volunteers for passing along their great love of the Eucharist to them as well. You guys are great!
To those who are receiving Eucharist for the first time, I pray that you will receive it with great joy. May it strengthen you and give you "food for the journey." As you receive the Eucharist along the journey of your life, may you receive it with that great enthusiasm, with that great longing and with that same great love as you will when you receive it for the first time!
