Una Iglesia Viva en el Espíritu

Throughout the Easter season, our Bible readings have given us glimpses into the life of the newborn Church and the bold witness of the early disciples.  They would spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to all who would listen. These disciples were the first to live a Christian way of life. Their example is as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago to inspire and guide us modern-day disciples. 

“The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.” How is this possible when you read our First Reading today? It is only possible because Paul and Barnabas and the other disciples saw themselves as nothing more and nothing less than bearers of Christ and His Good News. This realization brought them freedom — to offer themselves and their lives to others for the sake of the Gospel. The “results” of their efforts were up to God. They knew the Holy Spirit would never abandon them when their lives were focused on serving God and others.  As a result, they experienced a profound sense of joy that did not depend on external circumstances, a joy the world could not give.

How can you grow in your identity as a Christian so that you, too, can be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit? The Gospel reading today tells us: we must live in trust and dependence on Jesus, our Shepherd.  When we cling tightly to Him by freeing ourselves from holding on too tightly to our “stuff,” our time, and our achievements, we can hear His voice. He says so Himself: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” He knows us! He laid down His life for us to give us eternal life with Him. He will never ask anything of us that will harm us. Our Christian way of life is meant only to save us.

This week, resolve to take a step towards less concern about yourself and greater trust in Jesus, the Good Shepherd. You will become a joy-filled, Spirit-filled Christian carrying His good news everywhere you go.  Remember the following especially:

• Happy Mother’s Day to all our Moms.  We wouldn’t be here without you!

  
  

• Congratulations to all our boys, girls, and adults who have received their First Holy Communion and Confirmation these days!  We pray that the work of the Holy Spirit in the Body and Blood of Christ feeds and strengthens you every week for the adventure of Christian life ahead!  

  
  

• To all our catechists, parents, and sponsors - thank you for helping to form our children and adults in the faith during this past school year.  We truly appreciate your dedication to living and sharing your faith with the generations to come!

  
  

• And finally, I am writing this before the election of our new Pope.  Please pray for him and our church as we move forward:

O God, who in your providential design willed that your Church be built upon blessed Peter, whom you set over the other Apostles, look with favor, we pray, on ______ our Pope and grant that he, whom you have made Peter's successor, may be for your people a visible source and foundation of unity in faith and of communion. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Una Iglesia Viva en el Espíritu

A lo largo del tiempo de Pascua, nuestras lecturas bíblicas nos han permitido ver la vida de la Iglesia recién nacida y el valiente testimonio de los primeros discípulos. Difundirían la Buena Nueva de Jesucristo a todos los que quisieran escuchar. Estos discípulos fueron los primeros en llevar una vida cristiana. Su ejemplo es tan relevante hoy como lo fue hace 2.000 años para inspirarnos y guiarnos a nosotros, los discípulos de hoy. 

"Los discípulos se quedaron llenos de alegría y del Espíritu Santo". ¿Cómo es esto posible al leer nuestra Primera Lectura de hoy? Sólo es posible porque Pablo y Bernabé y los demás discípulos se veían a sí mismos nada más y nada menos que como portadores de Cristo y de su Buena Nueva. Esta comprensión les dio libertad para ofrecerse a sí mismos y sus vidas a los demás por el Evangelio. Los "resultados" de sus esfuerzos dependían de Dios. Sabían que el Espíritu Santo nunca les abandonaría cuando sus vidas se centraran en servir a Dios y a los demás.  Como resultado, experimentaron una profunda sensación de alegría que no dependía de circunstancias externas, una alegría que el mundo no podía dar.

¿Cómo puedes crecer en tu identidad como cristiano para que tú también puedas llenarte de alegría y del Espíritu Santo? La lectura del Evangelio de hoy nos lo dice: debemos vivir en la confianza y la dependencia de Jesús, nuestro Pastor.  Cuando nos aferramos fuertemente a Él, liberándonos de aferrarnos demasiado a nuestras "cosas", a nuestro tiempo y a nuestros logros, podemos oír su voz. Él mismo lo dice: "Mis ovejas escuchan mi voz; yo las conozco y ellas me siguen". Él nos conoce. Él entregó Su vida por nosotros para darnos la vida eterna con Él. Nunca nos pedirá nada que nos perjudique. Nuestro estilo de vida cristiano está pensado sólo para salvarnos.

Esta semana, decídete a dar un paso hacia una menor preocupación por ti mismo y una mayor confianza en Jesús, el Buen Pastor. Te convertirás en un cristiano lleno de alegría y lleno del Espíritu, que lleva Su buena nueva dondequiera que vaya.  Recuerda especialmente lo siguiente:

- Feliz Día de las Madres a todas nuestras mamás.  ¡No estaríamos aquí sin ustedes!

- ¡Felicidades a todos nuestros niños y niñas y adultos que han recibido su Primera Comunión y Confirmación estos días!  ¡Rezamos para que la obra del Espíritu Santo en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo les alimente y fortalezca cada semana para la aventura de la vida cristiana que tienen por delante!  

- A todos nuestros catequistas, padres y padrinos - gracias por ayudar a formar a nuestros niños y adultos en la fe durante este año escolar pasado.  Realmente apreciamos su dedicación a vivir y compartir su fe con las generaciones venideras.

- Y por último, escribo esto antes de la elección de nuestro nuevo Papa.  Por favor, recen por él y por nuestra Iglesia mientras avanzamos:

Oh Dios, que en tu providencial designio quisiste que tu Iglesia se edificara sobre el bienaventurado Pedro, a quien pusiste por encima de los demás Apóstoles, mira con favor, te rogamos, a ______ nuestro Papa y concédele que, a quien has hecho sucesor de Pedro, sea para tu pueblo fuente visible y fundamento de unidad en la fe y de comunión. Por nuestro Señor Jesucristo, tu Hijo, que vive y reina contigo en la unidad del Espíritu Santo, Dios, por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.
