Our Christian life surrenders control to God

Our Christian life surrenders control to God.  We surrender everything in grateful recognition that everything we have is a gift from Him.

Today's Bible readings remind us that God is always in control of His creation and His people. As we pray for sufficient rain to end drought and wildfires, our First Reading and Gospel speak of natural disasters and how to respond to them. They also reveal what can happen when we fully entrust our lives to God — in other words, when we surrender.

If we take our eyes off God, like Peter did with Jesus in today’s Gospel, we will lose sight of the fact that all is gift. We will begin to rely on ourselves instead of trusting in Him, and we will fail to make our lives a grateful response to His generosity.

Imagine if Peter had never looked away from Jesus. What an extraordinary adventure he would have experienced walking on the water with his Lord! The same is true for us. If we take our eyes off Christ, His countless blessings, and His faithful love for us, we will begin to sink as well.  But if we embrace this Christian way of life, loosening our grip on our time, talents, and treasure and placing our trust in God, life will become a great adventure rooted firmly in the One who never fails us.  Take a step in faith with Peter this week.  Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus no matter what!
