The essence of a friendship with Jesus

When I was a boy, I was an altar server.  One day, Father Fred, our Pastor, invited me to go fishing with him. I was so excited, I ran home and told my Mom and Dad.  Well, Father Fred and I never went fishing.  But I became a priest!  Maybe that’s what he meant when he invited me to “go fishing!”

Peter, Andrew, James and John were real fisherman, not what we would consider proper training for becoming disciples and missionaries.  I was the son of a coal miner and a seamstress. Yet, Jesus used them and their abilities — and my abilities — to spread the Gospel throughout the world.  

What are one or two of your abilities.  How could Jesus use them for his glory? Are you a good listener?  How might Jesus use that? Do you like hard, physical work?  How might Jesus use that? Do you enjoy Math and Science?  How might Jesus use that?

This week, listen for ways that Jesus is telling you to “come after me.”  When you hear his prompting, stop, pay attention, and do it. In prayer, ask Jesus to show you one way that you might follow him more closely this week.  Then ask him for the courage to actually do it.

This is the essence of a friendship with Jesus — to be always ready for the ways that He is calling us to bring His light to others. It’s more than something we do — it’s who we are!

Cuando era chico, era monaguillo. Un día, el padre Fred, nuestro párroco, me invitó a ir a pescar con él. Estaba tan emocionado que corrí a casa y se lo conté a mis papás. Bueno, el padre Fred y yo nunca fuimos a pescar. ¡Pero me convertí en sacerdote! ¡Quizás eso es lo que quería decir cuando me invitó a «ir a pescar»!

Pedro, Andrés, Santiago y Juan eran pescadores de verdad, no lo que consideraríamos una formación adecuada para convertirse en discípulos y misioneros. Yo era hijo de un minero del carbón y una costurera. Sin embargo, Jesús los utilizó a ellos y sus habilidades, y mis habilidades, para difundir el Evangelio por todo el mundo.

¿Cuáles son una o dos de tus habilidades? ¿Cómo podría Jesús utilizarlas para su gloria? ¿Eres buen oyente? ¿Cómo podría Jesús usar eso? ¿Te gusta el trabajo físico duro? ¿Cómo podría Jesús usar eso? ¿Te gustan las matemáticas y las ciencias? ¿Cómo podría Jesús usar eso?

Esta semana, escucha las formas en que Jesús te dice que «sígame». Cuando oigas su llamada, detente, presta atención y hazlo. En la oración, pídele a Jesús que te muestre una forma en la que puedas seguirlo más de cerca esta semana. Luego, pídele el valor para hacerlos.

Esta es la esencia de la amistad con Jesús: estar siempre listos para las formas en que Él nos llama a llevar su luz a los demás. Es más que algo que hacemos, ¡es lo que somos!
