Take a moment to rejoice in the Good News

Good news, everyone! Father Carlos is back from vacation, and we are half-way to Christmas!  It is time to take a moment to rejoice in the Good News that our Savior will come again in triumph one day. Today’s Bible readings on this Gaudete (“Rejoice”) Sunday are filled with reminders of God’s final victory over suffering and injustice, and encouragement to remain steadfast in our mission to live as faith-filled disciples.

Such a day almost seems too good to be true, especially when we look around at the situations we face in our families, nation, and world. But by faith, we know this day is coming. St. James, in our second reading, offers wise counsel: “Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord.” “Make your hearts firm….Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged.”

This is excellent advice as we face the challenges of everyday life in our broken world, especially in the hectic days that precede Christmas when stress can make us, and those around us, less than our best. St. James reminds us that we can choose our response to both the great strains and the minor annoyances of life. In other words, we can be good stewards of our attitude, “making our hearts firm” by practicing patience with others and refusing to give in to the temptation to complain. We can choose to see and rejoice in God’s presence with us, no matter the circumstances.

Rejoice that God has called you to enter His kingdom.  Keep your heart firmly fixed on this eternal goal and strive with all your might to give God and others the very best.

¡Buenas noticias para todos! ¡El padre Carlos ha regresado de sus vacaciones y ya estamos a mitad de camino de la Navidad! Es momento de tomarnos un momento para regocijarnos por la Buena Nueva de que nuestro Salvador volverá triunfante algún día. Las lecturas bíblicas de hoy, en este domingo Gaudete («Alégrense»), están llenas de recordatorios de la victoria final de Dios sobre el sufrimiento y la injusticia, y de ánimos para permanecer firmes en nuestra misión de vivir como discípulos llenos de fe.

Un día así parece casi demasiado bueno para ser verdad, especialmente cuando miramos a nuestro alrededor y vemos las situaciones a las que nos enfrentamos en nuestras familias, nuestra nación y el mundo. Pero por la fe, sabemos que ese día llegará. Santiago, en nuestra segunda lectura, nos ofrece un sabio consejo: “Sean pacientes hasta la venida del Señor”. “…mantengan firme el ánimo ...No murmuren, hermanos, los unos de los otros, para que el día del juicio no sean condenados».

Este es un excelente consejo para afrontar los retos de la vida cotidiana en nuestro mundo quebrantado, especialmente en los agitados días que preceden a la Navidad, cuando el estrés puede hacer que nosotros y quienes nos rodean no demos lo mejor de nosotros mismos. Santiago nos recuerda que podemos elegir nuestra respuesta tanto a las grandes tensiones como a las pequeñas molestias de la vida. En otras palabras, podemos ser responsables de nuestra actitud, “manteniendo firme el ánimo,” practicando la paciencia con los demás y negándonos a ceder a la tentación de quejarnos. Podemos elegir ver y regocijarnos en la presencia de Dios con nosotros, sin importar las circunstancias.

Alégrense de que Dios los haya llamado a entrar en su reino. Mantengan su corazón firmemente fijado en esta meta eterna y esfuércense con todas sus fuerzas por dar lo mejor de sí mismos a Dios y a los demás.
