Pentecost: The Church’s Birthday — and Ours

Today we reach the finale of the Easter season with the celebration of the great Feast of Pentecost. 10 members of our parish will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation today from Bishop Golka at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Colorado Springs.   80 others from are parish were confirmed earlier in May.  Thank you to their catechists and sponsors, families and friends, for helping them complete their initiation as Christians with the seal and the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Are you confirmed in the faith?  If you, or someone you know, has not received the Sacrament of Confirmation, let us know.  We are happy to help you prepare for next Easter.

Reflecting on today’s Bible readings inspires a sense of awe as we consider the mighty power of the Holy Spirit at work giving birth to and sustaining our Church. Just as awesome — the same Spirit is calling to us this day to take up our part in the Church’s saving work.

In the first reading, from Acts, we see the genius of the Holy Spirit moving through the newly confirmed Apostles “who began to speak in different tongues as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” The large crowd, gathered from all over the world were “amazed” and “astounded” that each one could understand the Apostles speaking in their own language.

Each one of us, young and old alike, is led by the Holy Spirit into the same mission as that of the first Apostles — to advance the Kingdom of God in our corner of the world. Just as the Holy Spirit did on that Pentecost day, the Holy Spirit speaks to us in our “own language” to give us the Good News of the Gospel and urge us to share it. We can think of our own language as the particular gifts, talents, and passions we possess. We experience the presence of the Holy Spirit through them and we are meant put them to the work in grateful service of the Kingdom of God. 

When we consider the Christian way of life we live, we often focus on the challenges it poses. Surrendering ourselves to the Holy Spirit is indeed a challenging way to live. But it leads to a life that is exciting, creative, and deeply rewarding. Being a Christian allows us to experience life as a great adventure because it is a life guided and directed by the very source of power and creativity— the Holy Spirit!

Pentecostés: el cumpleaños de la iglesia - y el nuestro

Hoy llegamos al final de la temporada de Pascua con la celebración de la gran Fiesta de Pentecostés. 10 miembros de nuestra parroquia recibirán hoy el Sacramento de la Confirmación de manos del Obispo Golka en la Catedral de Santa María en Colorado Springs.  Otros 80 miembros de nuestra parroquia fueron confirmados a principios de mayo.  Gracias a sus catequistas y padrinos, familias y amigos, por ayudarles a completar su iniciación como cristianos con el sello y los siete dones del Espíritu Santo.

¿Estás confirmado en la fe?  Si tú, o alguien que tú conoces, no ha recibido el Sacramento de la Confirmación, dínoslo.  Tendremos muchas ganas a ayudarle a prepararse para la próxima Pascua.

Reflexionando sobre las lecturas de la Biblia de hoy inspira un sentido de asombro al considerar el poderoso poder del Espíritu Santo en el trabajo de dar a luz y sostener nuestra Iglesia. Igual de asombroso es que el mismo Espíritu nos llame hoy a asumir nuestra parte en la obra salvadora de la Iglesia.

En la primera lectura, de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, vemos el genio del Espíritu Santo moviéndose a través de los Apóstoles recién confirmados "empezaron a hablar en otros idiomas, según el Espíritu los inducía a expresarse.” La gran multitud, reunida de todas partes del mundo, estaba desconcertada de que cada uno pudiera entender a los Apóstoles hablando en su propio idioma.

Cada uno de nosotros, jóvenes y mayores, somos guiados por el Espíritu Santo a la misma misión que la de los primeros Apóstoles: hacer avanzar el Reino de Dios en nuestro rincón del mundo. Al igual que hizo el Espíritu Santo aquel día de Pentecostés, el Espíritu Santo nos habla en nuestra "propio idioma" para darnos la Buena Nueva del Evangelio e instarnos a compartirla. Podemos pensar en nuestra propio idioma como los dones, talentos y pasiones particulares que poseemos. A través de ellos experimentamos la presencia del Espíritu Santo y debemos ponerlos en práctica con gratitud al servicio del Reino de Dios. 

Cuando consideramos el estilo de vida cristiano que vivimos, a menudo nos centramos en los retos que plantea. Entregarnos al Espíritu Santo es, en efecto, una forma difícil de vivir. Pero conduce a una vida emocionante, creativa y profundamente gratificante. Ser cristiano nos permite experimentar la vida como una gran aventura, porque es una vida guiada y dirigida por la fuente misma del poder y la creatividad: ¡el Espíritu Santo!
