Today’s Gospel ends with a bombshell: "But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

It's the mother of all questions, addressed to us now in the twenty-first century. We might look at our families, nation, or world in despair sometimes and conclude that faith in the God of peace has all but vanished.

A better approach might be to dig deeper into your own faith in the God of peace and Jesus's way of love, and pray, "I believe in you, God of peace, saving Jesus, Holy Spirit of love, and, come what may, I will continue to adore you, love you, and serve you." Let the question of Jesus in this Gospel push you to choose faith in the God of peace and to deepen every daily practice of faith.  

Our annual Stewardship Renewal is a most excellent way to do this.  Through self-examination, persistent prayer, service to those in need, and generous giving we can exercise our faith. Faith needs to be exercised, just as our bodies need exercise. We need to strengthen our faith, work at it, and put it into practice. We do that by standing up against the widespread despair that leads to all forms of sin and death. We do it by claiming our identities as sons and daughters of the God of peace and by bringing the good news of His Son, Jesus, to all those we meet. This annual renewal of how we really spend our time in prayer, talent in ministry, and treasure in generous giving is underway.  Please join us, complete your commitment card, and return it next weekend!  When the Son of Man comes, he will truly find faith on earth!

El Evangelio de hoy termina con una pregunta impactante: «Pero, cuando venga el Hijo del hombre, ¿creen ustedes que encontrará fe sobre la tierra?». Es la madre de todas las preguntas, dirigida a nosotros ahora, en el siglo XXI. A veces podemos mirar a nuestras familias, a nuestra nación o al mundo con desesperación y llegar a la conclusión de que la fe en el Dios de la paz ha desaparecido casi por completo.

Un enfoque mejor podría ser profundizar en nuestra propia fe en el Dios de la paz y en el camino del amor de Jesús, y rezar: «Creo en ti, Dios de la paz, Jesús salvador, Espíritu Santo de amor, y, pase lo que pase, seguiré adorándote, amándote y sirviéndote». Dejemos que la pregunta de Jesús en este Evangelio nos impulse a elegir la fe en el Dios de la paz y a profundizar en cada práctica diaria de la fe.  

Si Dios parece tardar en responder, pregúntate: ¿realmente le estás invocando «día y noche»? ¿Lo haces? No si estás cómodo, eres rico, estás bien alimentado y disfrutas de la vida. Si no necesitas a Dios, no le estás invocando “día y noche”, no puedes esperar que Dios te escuche y te responda. Pero si eres pobre, estás pasando apuros, sufres acoso por tu fe, si clamas por justicia y ayuda con la labor del ministerio, puedes confiar en que Dios te escuchará y te responderá rápidamente. 

Esto es lo que Jesús promete en este Evangelio. Es una promesa que tú también puedes tomar en serio.  Si sigues suplicando a Dios por la justicia, por el fin de las guerras, la violencia armada, la pobreza, la corrupción, y toda la violencia que destruye la creación, si rezas día y noche, puedes confiar en lo más profundo de tu ser que el Dios de la justicia y la paz escuchará y responderá a tus peticiones.  Puedes estar seguro de que la justicia y la paz llegarán pronto.
